What does it mean to deliver cohesive library service when every branch has its own history, needs, and identity? This webinar will explore the tension between local engagement, equitable service delivery, and systemwide alignment, including what this looks like in systems serving rural, remote, and urban communities.
In many smaller communities, the local library branch also serves as the most visible face of the municipality, adding another layer to its role and reinforcing strong local identity. This is fine until that identity clashes with the overall strategic identity of a multi-location library system.
This Canadian duo will reflect on how their libraries navigate shared service models, staff culture, branch-level flexibility, and expectations from boards, municipalities, and residents. Attendees will hear:
- What happens when a branch “goes rogue” in service of its users?
- How do you build buy-in for unified strategies while respecting local differences?
- How do governance, community pride, and internal politics shape cohesion in practice?
Presenters
Jamie Anderson has been the Director/CEO of the Kawartha Lakes Public Library in Ontario, Canada since 2017. The library serves a quickly growing, diverse community through 14 small urban and rural branches. Jamie has worked in public libraries for almost 30 years, landing in Kawartha Lakes after working with Vancouver Public Library, Thompson-Nicola Regional District Library, and Vancouver Island Regional Library. He holds an MLIS from the University of British Columbia and a Graduate Professional Certificate in Library Sector Leadership from the University of Victoria.
Brian Harding is the CEO and Chief Librarian at the Greater Sudbury Public Library in Ontario, Canada, a position he has held since 2022. Previously, he was the CEO of the Brock Township Public Library in Durham Region, and has also held positions with BiblioCommons, the Ontario Library Service, and the Oakville Public Library. Brian is proud to serve on the Board of CELA, the Centre for Equitable Library Access, where he holds the role of Treasurer.
